On Monday, Avery ordered her usual flowers and entered the office early, but Catherine and Lincoln weren’t there yet, so she went to the bakery down the street and picked up donuts for everyone. By the time she made it back, they still hadn’t arrived, so she took a donut, sat at her desk, and got started on her work.

At eight-thirty, they walked in, Catherine headed straight for her office, and Lincoln headed toward her. Her heart lifted when she noticed the red handbag clutched in Catherine’s right hand. So, it didn’t belong to the mystery woman after all. Good. She pointed to the kitchen. “I brought donuts if you’re hungry.”

Lincoln scowled. “We already ate. We ate with her.”

“Oh.” The grin was wiped off Avery’s face.

“Yes, oh.” She slapped her notebook down on the desk before sitting down.

“So, I shouldn’t expect you two early for breakfast anymore?”

She bit her lip. “I don’t know. Look, I know she likes you. Whoever this woman is, she will be gone in a few days. Back home, she said. She goes on and on. She never shuts up.”

“You’ve spent time with her?” Well, that was a depressing thought.

“We’ve had dinner with her the last three nights.”

She felt sick. This couldn’t be happening. She thought for sure they were growing closer. If Catherine wasn’t interested in her, what was all the footsy and holding hands about? She didn’t seem like the type to play the field with multiple women. But she also understood what it was like when an ex came back into the picture, especially if they both parted on good terms.

At ten sharp, Catherine gathered everyone together for their monthly employee meeting and fifteen minutes into the meeting, two deliverymen entered. One carried the daisies she had ordered that morning and the other one carried a dozen red roses. Avery’s heart sank and Lincoln sent the deliveryman with the roses a death glare. Avery had opted for all orange daises that morning. They were exquisite, but compared to the roses they lacked color and depth.

Catherine pointed the men toward her office, then resumed the meeting. When Lincoln patted Avery’s hand under the conference table, she had to fight the urge not to break down. Catherine never once looked in her direction. Now she knew something was going on. She was being out wooed.

She couldn’t help but glance in Catherine’s office when Lincoln and she sat down at her desk to continue working. Lincoln bit the end of her pen when her mom picked up the card on the daises, read it, then set it down on the desk. Neither missed the spark in her eyes when she picked up the card for the roses and tapped the card on her lips before picking up the daisies and setting them on the table behind her desk. She pushed the roses to the corner of her desk and couldn’t keep her eyes off them.

“What did you write on your card?” Lincoln asked without breaking eye contact with Catherine’s office.
